The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events.
The circulating video footage has triggered intense public reaction, with many questioning whether excessive force may have been used after the suspect had already been subdued.
Speaking on the matter, acting provincial commissioner Zeph Mkhwanazi said authorities are taking the matter seriously and promised that anyone found to have acted unlawfully would face consequences.
Police have also urged members of the public to stop sharing the graphic footage online out of respect for the deceased and those affected by the incident.
