Johannesburg – A 25-year-old woman was forced to deliver her baby on the roadside in KwaZulu-Natal after a taxi driver refused to take her to the hospital while in labour. The incident occurred on Friday, when a passer-by rushed to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) headquarters around 4:28 PM to request urgent assistance for the woman giving birth on a grass verge.
RUSA members, including female administrators, quickly arrived approximately 50 metres away and helped the woman safely deliver her baby before medical personnel arrived. According to the passer-by, the taxi driver had refused to assist, claiming that it would delay him from dropping off other passengers. The quick intervention by RUSA ensured both mother and child were safe.
Following the roadside delivery, both the mother and her healthy male baby were transported to the hospital for further medical care. Authorities have praised the swift response of RUSA personnel for preventing a potentially dangerous outcome in this emergency situation.
