Grief and Anger as Koketso Ramatlo is Laid to Rest
The small community of Kekana Gardens in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, was filled with heartbreak on Saturday, January 11, as mourners came together to say their final goodbyes to 17-year-old Koketso Ramatlo

Koketso’s life ended in a horrifying act of violence that has left her family, friends, and neighbors struggling to come to terms with their loss.

A Tragic Discovery
Koketso was reported missing on January 1, and the community’s worst fears became reality when her burnt, naked body was discovered near her family’s home on January 3. Her grandfather, Peter Ramatlo, made the devastating discovery early that morning.
Heartfelt Tributes
During the funeral service, Koketso was remembered as a bright and loving teenager full of potential. Friends, family, and community members shared emotional tributes, highlighting how deeply her loss has impacted everyone.
Community leader and family representative, Solly Shabangu, thanked everyone who supported the family, stating:
“It takes a village to raise a child. A neighbor is important because they are often the first to know in times like this.”
Joel Motau, from Lethamaga Secondary School where Koketso was a student, expressed the sorrow of losing such a promising young life:
“Her passing has left a void not only for her family but for all of us. We were expecting great things from her. We have lost.”
Sipho Baloyi, chairman of the School Governing Body, strongly condemned the brutal nature of her murder:
“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring Koketso’s killers face justice. She didn’t deserve to die like this. The entire school is traumatised.”
A Tearful Goodbye
Koketso’s best friends, Rorisang Mmoto (18) and Tshepiso Shiburi (17), shared their grief, describing her as more than just a friend.
“We will miss her dearly and pray for her soul to rest in peace,” they said.
Demand for Justice
The entire Kekana Gardens community is united in demanding justice for Koketso. Her tragic death is a stark reminder of the violence faced by young women in South Africa and the urgent need for action to prevent such tragedies.
