A disturbing video shared widely on social media has thrown Wynberg Station into the centre of a national conversation after a man in his forties died when he jumped in front of a moving train on Saturday.
The footage, now circulating with millions of views, shows the moments leading up to the impact—images that have left commuters and online viewers shaken.
The incident unfolded just after 10am, on what should have been an ordinary weekend rail trip. A train travelling from Claremont toward Wynberg came to an abrupt and unexplained halt. Confused passengers leaned toward windows, searching for clues. Train doors remained sealed, passengers murmured, and the silence inside the carriages grew heavier with each passing minute.
Then the whispers began: someone was on the tracks.
It took only a few more minutes before the full gravity of what had happened filtered through the stunned crowd. A man had reportedly entered the railway line moments before the train arrived, leaving the operator no time to avoid the collision. Captain FC van Wyk provided official details of the moments that followed.
“According to reports a male in his 40’s (unknown name and address) jumped in front of a train. He was struck by the train and sustained critical injuries. The medical services were summoned, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. However, en route, he passed away,” Van Wyk said.
Those who witnessed the aftermath described a haunting scene. Some commuters stood frozen on platforms, visibly shaken, unable to board connecting trains. “PRASA Western Cape is aware of Saturday’s tragic incident at Wynberg station, which is currently under investigation. No foul play is suspected based on preliminary information received by our security personnel at the station,” spokesperson Zinobulani Mihi said.
While addressing the tragedy, Mihi appealed to the public to take rail safety seriously, emphasising the dangers of entering operational areas.
“We advise customers or community members to observe safety notices and alerts at the stations and adhere to them, as our stations are operational areas,” Mihi said.
He added that PRASA runs ongoing safety awareness campaigns across the region, working with SAPS, Transnet, the Railway Safety Regulator, local law enforcement, and provincial partners to reduce incidents and educate the public.
