The Bergville community in KwaZulu-Natal was engulfed in grief this past weekend as family, friends, fellow musicians, and fans gathered to bid a final farewell to three Maskandi dancers and a two-year-old boy whose lives were tragically cut short in a devastating car accident.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday, 3 August 2025, claimed the lives of 21-year-old dancer Mthabisi Mahlangu, 15-year-old Lungelo Makhanga, two-year-old Nkosiyabo “Nkunzavava” Mngomezulu, and his father. They were returning from a performance when tragedy struck on the roads of Bergville. Witnesses and local authorities described the crash as one of the most heartbreaking incidents to hit the Maskandi music community in recent years.
Young Lives Lost Too Soon
The late Nkunzavava, fondly remembered as a joyful and energetic child, was the son of a prominent figure in the Maskandi scene. Even at his tender age, he had become a familiar face among dancers and musicians, often accompanying his father to performances. His sudden passing alongside his father has left the Mngomezulu family in deep mourning, with many struggling to comprehend the loss of two beloved family members in one tragic moment.
Mthabisi Mahlangu, at just 21 years old, had already made a name for himself in the Maskandi dance circuit. Known for his charisma, sharp footwork, and unwavering dedication, he was considered one of the most promising young talents in the genre.
