The Bergville community in KwaZulu-Natal was engulfed in grief this past weekend as family, friends, fellow musicians, and fans gathered to bid a final farewell to three Maskandi dancers and a two-year-old boy whose lives were tragically cut short in a devastating car accident.

The accident, which occurred on Sunday, 3 August 2025, claimed the lives of 21-year-old dancer Mthabisi Mahlangu, 15-year-old Lungelo Makhanga, two-year-old Nkosiyabo “Nkunzavava” Mngomezulu, and his father. They were returning from a performance when tragedy struck on the roads of Bergville. Witnesses and local authorities described the crash as one of the most heartbreaking incidents to hit the Maskandi music community in recent years.
Young Lives Lost Too Soon
The late Nkunzavava, fondly remembered as a joyful and energetic child, was the son of a prominent figure in the Maskandi scene. Even at his tender age, he had become a familiar face among dancers and musicians, often accompanying his father to performances. His sudden passing alongside his father has left the Mngomezulu family in deep mourning, with many struggling to comprehend the loss of two beloved family members in one tragic moment.

Mthabisi Mahlangu, at just 21 years old, had already made a name for himself in the Maskandi dance circuit. Known for his charisma, sharp footwork, and unwavering dedication, he was considered one of the most promising young talents in the genre.
Lungelo Makhanga, only 15, was equally admired for his discipline and passion. Despite his young age, he had been performing with experienced dancers and had dreams of one day leading his own troupe. His teachers and peers described him as “focused, humble, and full of potential.”

The Final Goodbye
The funeral service was held in an emotionally charged atmosphere. Traditional songs, heartfelt prayers, and moving tributes filled the air as the community came together to honour the lives lost. Maskandi musicians performed touching renditions in memory of the deceased, with many attendees visibly moved to tears.
Family members took turns speaking, recalling cherished moments and expressing their pain over the sudden loss. Friends of the late dancers shared stories of rehearsals, road trips, and stage performances that had brought them closer together. The sense of unity in the hall was a testament to the impact the young men had on those around them.
Community Calls for Road Safety Awareness
Following the tragedy, local leaders and community members have called for improved road safety measures, especially for artists who travel frequently for performances. They urged drivers to exercise caution and for transport services to ensure vehicles are well-maintained to prevent future accidents.
As the caskets were lowered into the ground, there was a shared sense of sorrow and disbelief. The loss of Mthabisi Mahlangu, Lungelo Makhanga, Nkosiyabo “Nkunzavava” Mngomezulu, and his father has left a deep void in the Maskandi community — one that will not be easily filled.
For now, their memory lives on through the music, dance, and joy they brought to countless lives, and the community vows to honour their legacy for years to come.
