MAFIKENG – The normally quiet township of Mosiane View in Mafikeng has been gripped by horror and disbelief following a gruesome murder that has shaken residents to their core. A disturbing video that surfaced on social media earlier today has sparked outrage, sorrow, and urgent questions about drug abuse, mental health, and police conduct in the North West province.

According to witnesses, the shocking incident unfolded on Sunday morning when a young man, reportedly under the influence of drugs, brutally attacked his mother at their home. In the distressing footage circulating online, the suspect is seen using a shovel to hack his mother to death in what many have described as one of the most disturbing scenes ever witnessed in the area.
Neighbours said they were alerted by screams and immediately called the police, but by the time officers arrived, the situation had already turned tragic. “We could hear shouting and crashing sounds. When we looked through the fence, it was chaos. The boy was completely out of control,” said one visibly shaken resident.
Police swiftly intervened and managed to restrain and arrest the suspect. However, the shocking developments did not end there. Unconfirmed reports later emerged that the suspect died while being transported in a police vehicle. The circumstances surrounding his sudden death remain unclear, sparking widespread speculation and concern among community members.
A senior police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “Yes, we are aware of the incident and the video circulating on social media. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will also be involved to determine the cause of death of the suspect while in custody,” the officer stated.
Community leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling for unity, compassion, and accountability. “This incident is heartbreaking on many levels. A mother has lost her life in the most horrific way imaginable, and a young man’s life has also ended under mysterious circumstances,” said local councillor Thabo Mokoena. “We cannot ignore the growing problem of drug abuse that continues to destroy families in our community.”
