Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, together with MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, visited survivors of a devastating bus-and-truck crash that claimed multiple lives on the N8. The collision, which occurred on Saturday, 15 November, has left the province in deep shock and mourning as families grapple with the sudden loss of loved ones and survivors begin a long journey toward recovery.
The tragic crash involved an interstate bus and a heavy motor vehicle near the RRR farming area in the Free State. The impact was severe, resulting in several deaths and scores of injuries. Emergency responders worked tirelessly through the night to rescue trapped occupants, stabilise the wounded, and transport them to nearby hospitals in Bloemfontein and Botshabelo.
On Sunday, the Premier and MEC visited Pelonomi Hospital, Botshabelo District Hospital, and other medical facilities where survivors are receiving treatment. Their visit was intended to offer comfort, reassurance, and government support to those affected.
One of the survivors, Polelo Mahloane, shared the heartbreaking news that doctors had informed him he would need to have his leg amputated as a result of the extent of his injuries. Mahloane had been seated near the front of the bus when the collision happened. He recalled noticing danger moments before the crash and warning the driver, but the impact happened too quickly to avoid. He expressed deep gratitude for surviving, though the emotional trauma of witnessing fellow passengers lying motionless around him has left a lasting impact. “It could have been worse,” he said, acknowledging that many others lost their lives instantly.
Another survivor, Nozipho Nhlathi, who suffered a broken leg, described the horror she witnessed in the aftermath of the collision. She recounted how passengers around her were severely injured or deceased and said she felt thankful to be alive despite the ordeal. “I saw dead people around me. It was horrible, and I am grateful that my life was spared,” she shared.
Premier Letsoha-Mathae expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it one of the most heartbreaking incidents the province has experienced this year. She urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially as the festive season approaches and traffic volumes increase. She also commended the medical teams for their swift and dedicated response, stating that their professionalism and compassion helped save lives during a highly chaotic and emotional period.
MEC Mbalula, who had visited the accident scene shortly after the crash, reiterated the Premier’s call for road safety. He emphasised the importance of responsible driving, adherence to speed limits, and vigilance behind the wheel. He conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
