Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – A cloud of sorrow hangs over the Ntuzuma community following a tragic incident in which a seven-year-old boy is presumed to have drowned in the Umgeni River. The heartbreaking event occurred on Saturday afternoon at approximately 14:00, leaving family members, friends, and the wider community devastated.

The child, identified as Thabaleng Mofokeng, was reportedly swimming in the Umgeni River with friends when he suddenly went missing. According to his father, Thabaleng had been visiting the area during the school holidays and was enjoying time outdoors when the tragedy struck. Moments later, he could no longer be seen, prompting panic and an urgent call for help.

Emergency response teams were alerted, and Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was dispatched early on Sunday morning to assist with the recovery operation. Upon arrival, officers were met with challenging terrain. The area where Thabaleng was last seen is inaccessible to vehicles, forcing Reaction Officers to walk approximately two kilometres on foot to reach the scene. Despite these difficulties, the team pressed on, determined to assist in locating the young boy.

Thabaleng was a learner at Thobele Primary School in Newlands West, KwaZulu-Natal. News of his disappearance has sent shockwaves through the school community, with classmates, teachers, and parents expressing deep sadness and concern. Many have described him as a cheerful and energetic child whose life was tragically cut short.
As the search continues, RUSA has confirmed that its helicopter pilot and crew remain on standby to provide aerial support if conditions allow. Search and Rescue teams are carefully combing the river and surrounding areas, working tirelessly in the hope of bringing closure to the grieving family. Authorities have not yet recovered the child’s body, but efforts remain ongoing.

This incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with swimming in rivers, especially during holiday periods when children spend more time outdoors. The Umgeni River, while a familiar landmark to local residents, can be unpredictable, with strong currents and hidden hazards posing serious risks, particularly to young swimmers.
Community members have begun gathering to support the Mofokeng family during this incredibly painful time. Messages of sympathy and prayers have been shared widely, reflecting the collective grief felt by many. Parents have also been urged to remain vigilant and ensure children are supervised around bodies of water to prevent similar tragedies.
As Search and Rescue operations continue, authorities are appealing to the public to avoid the area and allow emergency teams to conduct their work without interference. Further updates are expected once more information becomes available.
The loss of a young life under such circumstances serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly joy can turn into tragedy. The thoughts and condolences of the broader community remain with Thabaleng Mofokeng’s family as they endure an unimaginable ordeal.
