The community of Boikhutsong, Phase 8, is in mourning following the tragic and senseless killing of 32-year-old Lesego Masina, who was shot during a violent home invasion. The heart-wrenching incident occurred at her family home and has left friends, relatives, and neighbours devastated.
According to reports, a group of armed robbers stormed the Masina residence, holding the family hostage in their own home. The attackers reportedly demanded cellphones, money, and other valuables. In a horrifying turn of events, they tied up the family members and asked each person to identify themselves. When they reached Lesego, they separated her from the others and led her into one of the bedrooms.
Without hesitation or mercy, the intruders shot Lesego in the forehead. She died instantly.
The brutal nature of her killing has sent shockwaves through the community. What was meant to be an ordinary day turned into a nightmare — one that has now become an all-too-common reality in many parts of South Africa. The incident is not only a tragic loss for her family but also a stark reminder of the ongoing violence plaguing communities.
Lesego was laid to rest on Sunday, 27 July, at Soshanguve Crossing Cemetery. Her funeral was attended by family, friends, neighbours, and fellow community members who came to bid farewell to a woman they described as joyful, peaceful, and full of love.
“She was the light of our family,” a relative said tearfully. “Lesego had the warmest smile, always making everyone around her feel welcome and loved. It’s hard to believe she’s gone.”
Many mourners expressed frustration and anger over the growing levels of crime in their communities. “When will it end? How many more people must die before something is done?” asked a community member at the funeral.
The tragedy has sparked conversations online and in the media, with hashtags like #JusticeForLesego and #StopTheViolence trending as South Africans call for urgent action against violent crime. The pain of losing someone in such a brutal way is unbearable, and Lesego’s death is now a symbol of the urgency needed to protect innocent lives.
Lesego’s story has also prompted calls for more policing, community watch programs, and social interventions to address the root causes of crime. Many believe that until poverty, unemployment, and inequality are addressed, such tragedies will continue to haunt families across the nation.
As her loved ones struggle to come to terms with the loss, the community is holding onto hope that justice will prevail. Police are still investigating the incident, but as of now, no arrests have been made.
Lesego Masina’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her — a shining soul extinguished too soon by senseless violence. May she rest in eternal peace.
